El año que culminó fue uno de los más importantes en la historia reciente de la astronomía y es que fueron muchos los descubrimientos hechos que seguramente tendrán un gran impacto en nuestra devastada humanidad en los próximos lustros.Desde tiempo inmemorial el ser humano se sintió profundamente atraído por lo que veía en el cielo, tanto de día como de noche ¿acaso porque fuimos sembrados desde otro planeta?.
Lo cierto es que los astrónomos no han dejado de poner sus ojos en el cielo, con telescopios mejores y más grandes y con la misma pasión este año que siempre, pero algunos de los descubrimientos más interesantes de este año se han realizado cerca de nuestra propia casa, o al menos parecía que estuvieran aquí.
Desde mundos cercanos como Mercurio y Marte a aquellos que se encuentran más allá de nuestro sistema solar, la ciencia planetaria ha estado de suerte este año. En cuanto a los planetas extrasolares, los astrónomos contaron al menos 50 novatos este año, todo un récord en la historia de la humanidad."Ha sido un año muy emocionante en cuanto a descubrimientos de exoplanetas", dijo apenas hace unos días, Michael Liu, un astrónomo de la Universidad de Hawai.Luego se le preguntó: ¿Qué es lo que ha sido responsable de la cantidad de exoplanetas detectados?."
En general, ha surgido una amplia variedad de nuevas tecnologías, tanto instrumentos de telescopios que ya existían como nuevos telescopios que se han dedicado a ello, que permite a los astrónomos realizar mediciones mucho más precisas, lo que lleva a una gran abundancia de descubrimientos", dijo Liu.En fin que fue un año verdaderamente importante en este campo de la ciencia y, de acuerdo a los expertos estos fueron los cinco descubrimientos más importantes en el año que concluyó:Mundos alienígenas Con la cuenta de planetas extrasolares muy por encima de 300, los astrónomos parecen ir encaminados a encontrar otra Tierra (el premio astronómico) dentro de no mucho. Ya entrado el año, se hizo un anuncio impactante en Noviembre, cuando dos equipos de astrónomos informaron de que habían captado imágenes directas de exoplanetas. Geoffrey Marcy, de la Universidad de California, en Berkeley, dice que las imágenes son "la cosa más espectacular de 2008".
"En mi opinión profesional, esta es la fotografía de un planeta más importante que se haya tomado", dijo Marcy en una entrevista telefónica, refiriéndose a la imagen directa tomada por el Telescopio Espacial Hubble del planeta llamado Fomalhaut b. El sueño de oro de los descubrimientos de planetas extrasolares de este año se debe a las nuevas técnicas y observatorios, así como a los astrónomos llenos de energía dedicados a ello, dijo Marcy.

Para empezar, la misión Kepler de la NASA se lanzará en Marzo, con el propósito de encontrar planetas rocosos de un tamaño similar al de la Tierra que orbiten la zona habitable de sus estrellas, donde podrían existir agua líquida y vida.
¿Vida marciana?Al planeta rojo se le ha tratado como una celebridad este pasado año, con la toma de contacto del Phoenix Mars Lander de la NASA en mayo, gracias a la presencia continua de los gemelos Mars Exploration Rover (Spirit y Opportunity) y el Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter de la NASA (que ha tomado imágenes de casi el 40% del planeta). Uno de los objetivos principal de estas misiones ha sido encontrar señales de agua líquida, el ingrediente principal para la vida, que hubiera en el pasado o que haya en el presente. Por eso Phoenix fue protagonista de los titulares cuando recogió hielo de agua cerca del polo Norte de Marte este año. Previamente, este año, Spirit había encontrado depósitos de silicio en el cráter Gusev, lo que sugería, según los científicos, que alguna vez salió agua caliente desde debajo del suelo de Marte por fuentes hidrotermales. Lo sorprendente es que en la Tierra, estas fuentes albergaron vida una vez. El silicio descubierto podría conservar los fósiles de antiguas formas de vida si es que alguna vez existieron allí.
Y además, desde la MRO llegaron pruebas de carbonatos en la superficie marciana. Como los carbonatos no pueden existir en medios ácidos y hostiles, el hallazgo de este mineral indica que cualquier microbio que hubiera habido caminando por Marte cuando éste era todavía húmedo, podría haber disfrutado de una cómoda existencia.
Energía oscura, los científicos le han seguido la pista este año a una misteriosa "fuerza" llamada energía oscura, que se ha estado expandiendo por el universo a un ritmo creciente, y que se descubrió hace tan solo una década. Aunque los científicos reconocen que están a más de unos pocos años de poder resolver el enigma de qué es la energía oscura, un nuevo método utilizado este año confirmó su existencia, se indica que esta fuerza está acelerando el alejamiento de las galaxias del universo. Básicamente, en un universo en expansión dominado por la energía oscura, las galaxias se alejan unas de otras en vez de mezclarse y unirse.
Estos resultados también indican que la energía oscura toma la forma de lo que Einstein llamó la constante cosmológica, un término en la teoría de la relatividad general de Einstein que representa la posibilidad de que un espacio vacío lleve asociado una densidad y una presión. -¿sería en realidad él un extraterrestre, como muchos afirman?
-Agujeros negros
Los agujeros negros son tan densos que nada, ni siquiera la luz, puede escapar de su atracción gravitatoria. Aunque son invisibles, los astrónomos han inferido la presencia de estos objetos oscuros por sus efectos en los objetos cercanos. Y este año, por lo que parece, todos los alocados salieron de sus armarios cósmicos.Imagine el agujero negro que rote a mayor velocidad, que gira a unas velocidades cercanas a las de la luz.Si hablamos de obesidad, se dice en el mundo de la ciencia que un agujero negro podría haberse tragado 18 mil millones de soles. Más de la mitad del planeta más pequeño de nuestro sistema solar, Mercurio (Plutón una vez tuvo ese honor), seguía siendo un misterio hasta este año. El 14 de enero, la sonda Messenger de la NASA realizó su primer vuelo por encima de Mercurio, comenzando así la misión de fotografiar el planeta entero.Desde el primer momento, la sonda envió imágenes intrigantes, incluyendo pruebas de la presencia de volcanes. Las imágenes de la cuenca Caloris mostraban trazas de ríos de lava y la presencia de un volcán mayor que el estado de Delaware (EU), con laderas suaves.
Además, Mercurio está encogiendo a medida que su núcleo rico en hierro se enfría. Los científicos han estado haciendo muchas especulaciones acerca de esto a partir de las imágenes tomadas por la misión Mariner 10 en 1974.
Pero las imágenes de la Messenger mostraban más fallas de las que mostró la Mariner 10, lo que indica que la presión de contracción del planeta es, al menos, un tercio mayor de lo que se pensó en un principio. Los agujeros negros fueron antes que las galaxias
¿Qué fue antes, la galaxia o el agujero negro supermasivo que está en su centro? Esta clásica pregunta de "¿el huevo o la gallina?" ha empezado a tener respuesta con los nuevos estudios de agujeros negros supermasivos situados muy lejos (en el espacio y en el tiempo) y todo indica que tras la Gran Explosión que dio origen al universo se formaron muy rápidamente los agujeros negros, que generaron las galaxias a su alrededor. Una galaxia es un conglomerado enorme de gas, polvo, estrellas y otros cuerpos celestes menores que se mantienen unidos por su atracción gravitatoria mutua.
Todas las galaxias que tienen la forma aproximada de una esfera, incluida la Vía Láctea que contiene nuestro Sistema Solar, tienen un agujero negro supermasivo en su centro. ¿Cuál fue el origen de esta asociación y cómo se desarrolló? Esto todavía no se sabe, reconocieron ayer los astrónomos de un equipo internacional que ha utilizado, entre otros, el radiotelescopio de Pico Veleta, en Granada, para sus observaciones. Hay muchas teorías, pero "tenemos que vivir con lo que el universo nos muestra y tratar de explicarlo", comentó resignadamente el astrónomo estadounidense Chris Carilli, en conferencia telefónica desde California, donde presentó el trabajo.
Se sabía que la masa del bulbo de una galaxia (su zona central y más densa) y la masa del agujero negro correspondiente mantienen una relación lineal, que no parecía depender ni de su tamaño ni de su edad. La primera es unas 700 veces mayor que la segunda. El agujero negro de la Vía Láctea, por ejemplo, tiene una masa de cuatro millones de soles.
Sin embargo, al disponer de instrumentos para observar mejor y más lejos, los astrónomos están descubriendo que esta proporción cambia en agujeros negros muy distantes. Observarlos implica que se están viendo cuando el universo era muy joven, por lo que tarda la luz en llegar a los telescopios que los observan.
Cuando el universo sólo tenía 1.000 millones de años (ahora tiene unos 13.700 millones de años), la proporción cambia, al menos en los pocos cuásares observados ahora, con radiotelescopios franceses, alemanes y estadounidenses, en los que se han podido pesar las galaxias. En ellos, la masa del bulbo galáctico es sólo de unas 30 veces la del agujero negro, frente al factor común de 700 veces.
"La relación lineal indicaba que el agujero negro y el bulbo galáctico se influyen mutuamente en su desarrollo", explicó desde California, donde se celebra la reunión anual de la Sociedad Americana de Astronomía, el alemán Dominik Riechers, también miembro del equipo. "La gran pregunta ha sido si uno surge antes que el otro o si se desarrollan al mismo tiempo, manteniendo la relación entre masas durante todo el proceso".
Ahora que se ve que al principio no se mantiene la relación, y que todo indica que los agujeros negros empezaron a desarrollarse antes, el gran desafío es saber cómo se realimentan los dos a lo largo de su existencia: "No conocemos el mecanismo que actúa ni la causa de que, en algún momento del proceso, se establezca la relación que consideramos estándar", reconoció Riechers.
Los astrónomos tienen puestas sus esperanzas para resolver éste y otros misterios del nacimiento de las estrellas y las galaxias en los nuevos radiotelescopios y telescopios de infrarrojos que se preparan. La ampliación del actual Very Large Array en Estados Unidos, la batería internacional de radiotelescopios ALMA que se construye en el desierto chileno de Atacama y en la que participa España, y el telescopio espacial James Webb, que sucederá al Hubble, son algunos de los instrumentos "que tendrán mayor sensibilidad y resolución para observar el gas en estas galaxias a la pequeña escala necesaria para hacer estudios detallados de su dinámica", explicó Riechers.

Esto todavía no se sabe, reconocieron ayer los astrónomos de un equipo internacional que ha utilizado, entre otros, el radiotelescopio de Pico Veleta, en Granada, para sus observaciones. Hay muchas teorías, pero "tenemos que vivir con lo que el universo nos muestra y tratar de explicarlo", comentó resignadamente el astrónomo estadounidense Chris Carilli, en conferencia telefónica desde California, donde presentó el trabajo.
Se sabía que la masa del bulbo de una galaxia (su zona central y más densa) y la masa del agujero negro correspondiente mantienen una relación lineal, que no parecía depender ni de su tamaño ni de su edad. La primera es unas 700 veces mayor que la segunda. El agujero negro de la Vía Láctea, por ejemplo, tiene una masa de cuatro millones de soles.
Sin embargo, al disponer de instrumentos para observar mejor y más lejos, los astrónomos están descubriendo que esta proporción cambia en agujeros negros muy distantes. Observarlos implica que se están viendo cuando el universo era muy joven, por lo que tarda la luz en llegar a los telescopios que los observan.
Cuando el universo sólo tenía 1.000 millones de años (ahora tiene unos 13.700 millones de años), la proporción cambia, al menos en los pocos cuásares observados ahora, con radiotelescopios franceses, alemanes y estadounidenses, en los que se han podido pesar las galaxias. En ellos, la masa del bulbo galáctico es sólo de unas 30 veces la del agujero negro, frente al factor común de 700 veces.
"La relación lineal indicaba que el agujero negro y el bulbo galáctico se influyen mutuamente en su desarrollo", explicó desde California, donde se celebra la reunión anual de la Sociedad Americana de Astronomía, el alemán Dominik Riechers, también miembro del equipo. "La gran pregunta ha sido si uno surge antes que el otro o si se desarrollan al mismo tiempo, manteniendo la relación entre masas durante todo el proceso".
Ahora que se ve que al principio no se mantiene la relación, y que todo indica que los agujeros negros empezaron a desarrollarse antes, el gran desafío es saber cómo se realimentan los dos a lo largo de su existencia: "No conocemos el mecanismo que actúa ni la causa de que, en algún momento del proceso, se establezca la relación que consideramos estándar", reconoció Riechers.
Los astrónomos tienen puestas sus esperanzas para resolver éste y otros misterios del nacimiento de las estrellas y las galaxias en los nuevos radiotelescopios y telescopios de infrarrojos que se preparan. La ampliación del actual Very Large Array en Estados Unidos, la batería internacional de radiotelescopios ALMA que se construye en el desierto chileno de Atacama y en la que participa España, y el telescopio espacial James Webb, que sucederá al Hubble, son algunos de los instrumentos "que tendrán mayor sensibilidad y resolución para observar el gas en estas galaxias a la pequeña escala necesaria para hacer estudios detallados de su dinámica", explicó Riechers.

La Vía Láctea deja de ser la «hermana pequeña» de la galaxia Andrómeda
Nuestra galaxia es más grande y gira a mayor velocidad de lo que se pensaba. Estas son las principales conclusiones de un estudio presentado estos días en la reunión de la Sociedad Americana de Astronomía, celebrado en Long Beach (California). Mark Reid, del Centro de Astrofísica del Harvard-Smithsonian, fue el encargado de dar a conocer a la comunidad científica los resultados obtenidos a partir de las imágenes del sistema VLBA, formado por diez radiotelescopios que registran imágenes de alta calidad y que son los que han permitido deducir el tamaño de la Vía Láctea y a la velocidad a la que se mueve. La resolución de estas imágenes es tan alta que es equivalente a ser capaz de leer un periódico que está en El Cairo desde un cómodo sillón en Edimburgo.
Esto ha permitido saber que la galaxia a la que pertenece el Sistema Solar es más o menos del mismo tamaño que Andrómeda y no menor como se creía hasta ahora. Pero también es importante saber que se mueve un 15 por ciento más deprisa de lo que indicaban las predicciones realizadas hasta el momento. De su mayor masa y su velocidad se infiere que las futuras colisiones con galaxias vecinas pueden producirse antes de lo pensado. «Que la Vía Láctea tenga más masa de lo que se suponía implica que su fuerza gravitacional es más importante, lo que aumenta la probabilidad de colisión con Andrómeda y otras galaxias vecinas», indicó Mark Reid, aunque eso sí, no antes de miles de millones de años.

INVESTIGACION MUSICAL
MADRID.- No es ficción, como es el caso de Robert Redford en el film 'El hombre que susurraba a los caballos'. Es real. David Rothenberg susurra a las ballenas y éstas le contestan. Mejor dicho, toca su clarinete y la ballena le responde con un canto en la misma tonalidad y frecuencia. Así pueden estar media hora, hasta que el cetáceo se cansa del juego y desaparece en el gran azul.
La prueba está en un documento sonoro en el que se puede escuchar cómo Rothenberg se adapta a los cánticos de varias ballenas en aguas de Hawai, y éstas responden como si de un diálogo se tratara. Los biólogos lo llamarían interactuar.
Si ese diálogo se ve en un diagrama de la grabación, se observa perfectamente cómo frecuencias, ritmos y tonos se suceden paralelamente durante el susurro de Rothenberg y una ballena jorobada, que según este polifacético estadounidense, "son las que más cantan y sólo lo hacen los machos".
Rothenberg no es biólogo. Es ornitólogo, músico de jazz y filósofo. Esta es la materia que imparte en el Instituto Tecnológico de Nueva jersey. Sus alumnos son arquitectos o ingenieros y les someten a complejas e ingeniosas preguntas filosóficas. "Yo siempre les contesto con mi clarinete, lo entienden mejor que si les doy la respuesta de un filósofo", afirma. Lo debe de hace aún mejor que Woody Allen porque sigue dando clases desde hace muchos años.
De sus otras actividades, la que más le gusta es interactuar con animales con susurros. Y lo hace con muchos géneros de especies: aves, cetáceos e insectos. "Toco para expresarme. Me ayuda a decir lo que quiero; esas cosas bonitas que el lenguaje no me permite. Y muchas personas me entienden, aunque sean de otras culturas, porque no existe nadie que esté en contra de la música".
Rothenberg sugiere que hay un principio universal en la música, un ritmo que compartimos los seres vivos de la Tierra. «No puedo afirmarlo, pero quizá se trate de un proceso evolutivo de los principios universales de la comunicación.
Yo, desde luego, lo siento cuando toco música», asegura en la entrevista. Este polifacético personaje ha descubierto cosas apasionantes gracias a esa cualidad. Por ejemplo, que las ballenas y aves cantan igual. "Sólo hay que ralentizar el canto de un pájaro para que suene igual que el de una ballena". Para demostrarlo abre su portátil, pincha en el documento y, efectivamente, el trino de un pájaro gato suena igual de ronco y cadencioso que el de una ballena. ¡Increíble!
La misma sorpresa sintieron los asistentes a su charla-musical de hace unos días en el Museo Cosmo Caixa de Madrid.
Al igual que cuando tocó su clarinete en esa frecuencia musical universal de la que probablemente sea el mejor compositor... humano. Asegura que sus melodías con las ballenas son composiciones musicales: "Hay ritmo, notas, evolución, estructura, principio y final".
Rothenberg es auto del libro '¿Por qué cantan los pájaros?', traducido a numerosos idiomas. Su obra literaria más reciente, 'Thousand Mile Song', explica cómo realizar música con las ballenas.
Cuenta cómo lo ha hecho en Hawai, o en el Banco de la Plata (República Dominicana), donde cada año acuden a aparearse las ballenas jorobadas. "Voy a ir a Cabo Verde y estoy estudiando si en la islas Canarias hay paso anual de ballenas jorobadas", adelanta.
Su próximo proyecto es buscar el cha-cha-cha de los insectos. Acudirá a Pestival, un encuentro se celebrará sobre ellos en Londres en 2009. Acude con algo en la cabeza, el corazón y su clarinete; y modula el sonido siseante que oscila de volumen y tonos, de millones de cigarras. "Es apasionante su ciclo biológico: salen de sus nidos cada 17 años, cantan durante una semana para atraer a las hembras, vuelan en gigantescos enjambres, y regresan a sus nidos". Merecerá la pena escucharlo.

La vertiginosa velocidad de la Vía Láctea

MADRID.- Quien tenga miedo a la velocidad, que se agarre: la Vía Láctea gira 160.000 kilómetros por hora más deprisa de lo que se pensaba hasta ahora. Ese aumento de velocidad, respecto a la estimación anterior, implica que su masa es un 50% más grande de lo que señalaron investigaciones anteriores y que, por tanto, es más probable que colisionemos con nuestra vecina, la galaxia Andrómeda. Eso sí, en un futuro que está aún muy lejano. «Gracias a este trabajo, nuestra galaxia ha dejado de ser la hermana pequeña de su familia», ha señalado Mark Reid, del Centro de Astrofísica de Harvard-Smithsonian.
Estos nuevos datos significan que la Vía Láctea se mueve en su órbita a la vertiginosa velocidad de 965.000 kilómetros por hora, según se ha logrado observar desde una de sus esquinas, que es donde se encuentra el Sistema Solar donde se ubica la Tierra, es decir, a 28.000 años luz de su centro galáctico.
«Se trata de un trabajo muy interesante; no es fácil conocer la estructura y el movimiento de la Vía Láctea porque estamos dentro de ella. Es como querer conocer cómo es un bosque paseando bajo sus árboles», explica Rafael Bachiller, director del Observatorio Astronómico Nacional.
En este caso, los científicos utilizaron el radiotelescopio Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), de la Fundación Nacional de la Ciencia de EEUU, un conjunto de 10 antenas, distribuidas por todo el país, que conforman una de las mayores instalaciones de observación desde la Tierra.
Debido a su gran capacidad para lograr imágenes de gran detalle -lo que se logra midiendo las ondas con rayos infrarrojos-, los investigadores han desarrollado un programa de medición. Sus resultados han sido presentados en la reunión anual de la Sociedad Americana de Astrofísica, celebrada estos días en Long Beach (California).
Los astrónomos observaron que había regiones de una prolífica formación de estrellas en toda la galaxia. En algunas de estas zonas, encontraron moléculas de agua que emiten radiaciones monocromáticas: son como el haz de un láser, pero en microondas y se denominan másers cósmicos. Estos másers son detectables por el VLBA.
Durante su investigación, observaron estas regiones en diferentes ocasiones -algunas veces cuando la Tierra estaba en la cara opuesta de su órbita alrededor del Sol- y tomaron medidas de las distancias y de los movimientos de las moléculas. «Eso nos ha permitido tener datos directos y utilizar el tradicional método de la triangulación para saber la velocidad, en lugar de tener en cuenta propiedades como el brillo, que se utilizan en otros estudios», explicaba en Long Beach el astrónomo Karl Mente, del Instituto Max Planck de Radioastronomía, en Alemania.
Con esta técnica, descubrieron que las distancias diferían mucho de las anteriores mediciones, en ocasiones hasta las doblaban. Encontraron también que las áreas de estrellas en formación que albergan los másers son las que «definen los brazos en espiral de la Vía Láctea», como añadía su colega Mark Reid.
Problemas económicos
Durante el encuentro, los astrómonos que han participado en este proyecto destacaron la gran capacidad de observación del radiotelescopio VLBA, cuya viabilidad económica parece estar en peligro tras unos años de abandono financiero por parte de la Administración Bush.
«El VLBA es capaz de fijar la posición de cada objeto que orbita alrededor de la Vía Láctea con una precisión asombrosa, mediante la medición de las radiaciones. Ello nos permite determinar movimientos en tres dimensiones de las estrellas en formación, que no siguen una trayectoria circular, sino que se mueven alrededor de le galaxia», aseguraron.
Coincidiendo con el encuentro californiano, el investigador Martin Pohl, de la Universidad de Iowa, también presentó ayer un mapa completo de los cuatro brazos en espiral de esta galaxia. Ya se sabía que la Vía Láctea está distribuida en un disco con un núcleo de estrellas y que fuera de ese área las estrellas se sitúan en brazos en espiral. Pohl y su equipo ha podido observar que existe una total simetría en la estructura de estos brazos: han probado que hay dos principales y otros dos más débiles, y no uno sólo uno como se creía.

Now, in physics there is a parameter called "Schumann's Resonance". Using that we can determine the strength of the earth's magnetic field. While for many centuries, it was constant around 7.80 cycles per second, during the last 7-8 years, it has risen to 11 cycles per second and is continuing to increase dramatically. If you work it out mathematically, it appears that, by the year 2012, the "Schumann's Resonance" is likely to be 13 cycles per second. When this resonance is 13 cycles per second, the earth's core would stop rotating with magnetic field gone, your mind is gone. When I say "your mind", what I mean is your " samskaras". "OK. Most of you know that the earth has got a magnetic field. As the earth's molten core is rotating; the magnetic field is created. The thought sphere of the human mind is located in the earth's magnetic field. This magnetic field has been weakening dramatically over last ten years. Now, in physics there is a parameter called "Schumann's Resonance". Using that we can determine the strength of the earth's magnetic field. While for many centuries, it was constant around 7.80 cycles per second, during the last 7-8 years, it has risen to 11 cycles per second and is continuing to increase dramatically. If you work it out mathematically, it appears that, by the year 2012, the "Schumann's Resonance" is likely to be 13 cycles per second. When this resonance is 13 cycles per second, the earth's core would stop rotating with magnetic field gone, your mind is gone. When I say "your mind", what I mean is your " samskaras". Return of the Ancestors: Our Ancestry Returns

What helps you connect to being human on Earth? It is not just about the stars from which you came, but the land, the traditions and the race that runs through your DNA. As most light workers understand, it is not about becoming so filled with light that you leave Earth (finally), it is about connecting so deeply with Source, Self and Earth so that you are a bridge between Father Sky and Mother Earth. That bridge, you, heals and loves the Earth, as it welcomes her into a space of more peace, more love and more joy. We as humans are necessary for Earth's ascension into her next stage of growth because we are a beloved part of her. As a child of Mother Earth and Father Sky, we are at our best when we receive the love that is offered, and forgive what we think is wrong. We are at our best when we are the fullest expression of our unique Divine Spark. This is what good parents desire: Their children to be happy.
This mission is embedded in all of us. And as we heal ourselves, living a life of Joy, we offer our ancestors healing seven generations back and seven forward. And so with that model, Mother Earth and Father Sky are evolving by our efforts. They love us profoundly for it, because any good parent could see that despite the difficult conditions here on Earth, we still dedicate ourselves to love. Knowing who you are as a human being, and loving being a human being is so crucial. While God, Spirit, Creator is always available, our spiritual lineages and ancestry keep our Divine connection grounded in our humanity.
This April, a historic gathering, Return of the Ancestors (www.earthworksforhumanity.org) will take place in northern Arizona. Elders from all over the world will gather in ceremony for the re-union of indigenous wisdom, and for world harmony. As I looked at the guest list, I couldn't help but notice that there was very little representation from the Indigenous Caucasian tradition. I know what you are thinking, what is the Indigenous Caucasian tradition? Well, I'd like to know too.
As a little girl, I spent most of my time in our yard, which backed up into the woods. I had favorite trees, played with fairies and journeyed with my imagination to parallel worlds and magical lands. I could spend hours out there. The time after a rain was one of my favorites and I would stare, mesmerized at the dew on the leaves. Puddles of water collected at the roots of the trees, forming pools that my pixie friends would swim in. I dreamed of kingdoms and unicorns, making potions from nature and miraculously healing people with my energy that ran through my hands. This was a natural spiritual process that welled up inside me, but no context in the modern world with which to express it. This was my secret world and I never discussed it. My mother was very spiritual, and would have embraced my ideas, but having been unknowingly stripped of her magic, it wasn't truly real to her either. Had I brought it up it would have been lovingly supported as make believe that she wished were true, and yet this was where I felt the most comfortable, the most real. With no context, I had an instinct to keep this magical world a secret, and it remained that way for a very long time. Many spiritual people have had this experience; I know I am not unique.
I grew up in a predominantly reformed Jewish neighborhood in Westchester County, New York. There were a lot of bagels, Bar Mitzvahs and very high SAT scores. There were a few other Episcopalians, but Christianity was not a culture that directed our lives. In general church was a pleasant experience and I loved the choir music. However I rejected the dogmatic approach to Christianity at an early age, and my natural pagan roots were somewhat supported by my mother who would tell me stories of how Christianity was really created by the Roman Empire for political reasons, that the time we celebrate Christmas was actually adapted from the pagan solstice celebration and that Jesus was actually born some time in the spring or summer (recently scientifically proven by astronomy). Past lives and reincarnation were often talked about and I was constantly reminded that I chose her as a mother whenever we would argue! We were frequent guests at the A.R.E. center, founded by the sleeping prophet, Edgar Cayce. The greatest gift my mother ever gave me was of exposing me to this and encouraging my spirituality.
As a teenager, I felt tremendous callings towards Native Americans. I even did an independent study on the subject as a senior in high school. I didn't want to be just another hippie co-opting native tradition, but it seemed the best example for what I was experiencing in my heart and soul. I felt so much grief over the destruction of these great cultures. But what of the indigenous roots of Caucasians? I assumed there were none. I didn't really see any around me, and while I felt an incredible pull towards the Celts, tales of Avalon were just that, tales from a long time ago, and I just didn't connect my own European roots to the Celts. I thought it had all died and that hurt. I didn't feel connected to the Wiccan tradition, and the Episcopalian church did not fill the longing for my indigenous roots, and I didn't feel I had the right to claim any other race's roots. I carried shame for my race, guilt in my genes. The guilty robe of the race that took out the Native Americans, enslaved the Africans massacred the Jews and on and on. It seemed the most white thing I could do was get a good job, make good money and set the table properly. While I was good at the latter, the former was kind of a bust. But this was my "heritage." Then why, in my heart, did I wanted to live by the cycles of Nature, reuniting with Mother Earth, living by magic and creativity, swimming in the Mystery?
My freshman year of college I was confronted with this issue head on. There was a group for all minorities, but there was no group for me. And, had I wanted to put together a group, I could not have formed the "White American" group. That would have been a real "no no" and I really wouldn't have known what do with it. And part of being white is not talking about the fact that you are white. I was told I didn't need a group because the whole United States was my group. But I did need one, because I had no roots, I was ashamed of being white, and I had no idea what being Caucasian even meant.
Have the supremacists taken away our ability to connect to the innate gifts of being Caucasian, of being a human connected to the root of humanity, of Earth? I think that is one of the biggest cover-ups in history: The raping of the indigenous roots of Caucasians, tracing back at least to the Un-holy Roman Empire. Its not about race, its about stripping the Indigenous of their wisdom of all tribes, of all colors. Because the dominant race of people to conquer was/is white, all white people are at risk to assume that's who they are too. But we all have had the rug pulled over our eyes. It is not only the Native American children who were taken off their land, sent to boarding school and forced to "convert" to being "white." The Earth honoring clans of Europe had been slaughtered and converted long before. Our own public schools, in the United States, still do the same thing to our children today.
As I entered into the path of the healer and began doing ceremonies around the world, many indigenous people asked me, "What is your tradition? Where do you come from?" The only thing I knew is that I came from New York, the Stars, and before that Source, like everyone else. And I was American. But I couldn't tell them about spiritual roots, heritage, ancestry, tradition, anything like that. I had no answers. Over the years I participated in more and more Indigenous ceremonies, trying to find the root, and slowly discovering the power of my own body and how it was connected to the Earth. But I watched with envy as the tribes called upon their ancestors during ceremony, connecting into some invisible strength that gave them more power. I didn't think calling upon my own ancestors was such a great idea. They were Catholics and Protestants who went to church because they were supposed to. Anyway, my mission was to heal the trauma that had been carried down generation to generation, and frankly I thought they would just screw up the ceremony…then what would the Native Americans say?
At one gathering, and Apache elder spoke to the whites in the audience, he said, "Find your roots. You need it to get through 2012. They are in Europe. Go back and find yourselves so you can transition safely." I wondered if he was on to something. Growing up there was absolutely no emphasis on roots. Part of being an American is not placing too much significance on your background. When my immigrant ancestors came over from Europe, they did whatever they could to assimilate, many times completely erasing all memory of their heritage.
Over the years I was given many clues to find my heritage, but there was a block within me, a pain so great at having lost the connection that getting it back meant facing the loss head on. This is a crucial thing to acknowledge. There is great pain in our disconnection from the Mother, and the only way back is by confronting it. It is also why so many are completely unable to do it.
A year ago, I asked my parents to write down the story of their families. My father really got excited and he wrote down all the scandals, secrets and lies as best he knew, breaking down my bloodline into 16ths. My dad is a great writer and has an uncanny knack for details and memory. I had heard bits and pieces of the story over the years, but seeing it all written down was like reading a mystery novel. While reading the story, I was only interested in learning about the Italian aspect of the family. I hoped that by being Italian, I might get some pigment in my skin. I kind of skipped over the other information. Treadway, my last name, is not actually a blood name. I wont go into details, but my last name should Cascio, from southern Italy. Due to "scandals," we have no connection to that bloodline. My mother was able to tell me small details about my great grandfather while he was still in Italy. This was really exciting. His surname was Attanasio. It was hard for me to connect with the Italian line since I was so white-looking, but I was proud of it.
At about that same time I passed by a booth selling Celtic jewelry in Union Square, NYC. An overwhelming sense of longing washed over me, I stood paralyzed, wanting so badly to walk up to the booth and make a connection. But feeling the pain of the unfulfilled longing, I kept walking. I wanted the Celtic times back, but I didn't feel any right to claim being Celtic since I wasn't Irish. But as I confronted the wound of losing the connection from Earth and from myself and from Source over the next year, I got the courage. This year, when I walked by that same Celtic booth, I walked away with a Celtic cross and a new friend, the owner of the store, a Celtic Storyteller. I felt such a connection to the tradition it totally floored me. It was a pivotal moment.
After this encounter, I decided to revisit the document my Dad had put together for me. After carefully adding up all the 16ths of my bloodline, I was startled to discover that I was half Irish. In fact I was more Irish than Italian. I don't know why I never knew this, it was never really talked about. I only heard about a German grandmother on my Dad's side, so I assumed I had a lot of German, which I never wanted to tell anyone having grown up in Jewish neighborhood. But in fact I was only 1/16th German. Having Irish ancestry completely resonated.
This was the information I had been looking for all these years. Being half Irish was enough of a connection to take me into my European indigenous roots. And it snowballed from there. I began learning all about the Celtic and Druid paths. As I read up on Druidism, I was able to see that the information I received through my nightly channelings for the past two years was almost verbatim in the curriculum of Druidism. I sat stunned at what I was reading. I couldn't believe it, because it finally felt like my body, mind and spirit all came together in a human context, a structure that could house my "brand" of spirituality. I had a tradition and I had indigenous roots. It had been there all along. Who knows for how many hundreds or thousands of years it had remained dormant in my family, but after my research, I knew it was alive and well in the world.
Now, as I sit in the great landscapes of the Southwest, I can relax into the knowledge that I have indigenous roots that speak to me naturally, that are valid that have an ancestral power, that guide me. It is another step in my spiritual path to unity, but one that made me weep for a week. I am still American, still Episcopalian, still a New Yorker, still from the Stars, and still from Source, like everyone else, but I am also a child of Mother Earth and Father Sky, expressing my love for her through a specific structure and community to which I belong. This keeps me proud of being human.
The Mayans, the Kogi, the Havasupai, the Dine, the Apache, and others have all so generously helped me to find my own Indigenous roots. They knew what was missing, and despite their history with white people, took it upon themselves to welcome me home to my roots.
These structures, rituals and traditions that each race has received and created are designed specifically to express the gifts of that race. This intelligence connects us to the circle of time, the medicine wheel, to each other, to the Earth and to God. Most of our religious holidays have been completely stripped their intelligence. The absence of our ancient practices in the modern world, and especially in the Caucasian race, are a major part of the chaos today.
So this April, at the Return of the Ancestors, I bring with me my own ancestral line, and the knowledge that there is beauty and truth to the Caucasian race. I am at the beginning of this awareness, and I hope that others can relate to the story I tell. I hope to help restore this truth, to work with others of all nations to bring humanity into balance with each other and Mother Earth once again. These structures, rituals and traditions that each race has received and created are designed specifically to express the gifts of that race. This intelligence connects us to the circle of time, the medicine wheel, to each other, to the Earth and to God. Most of our religious holidays have been completely stripped their intelligence. The absence of our ancient practices in the modern world, and especially in the Caucasian race, are a major part of the chaos today.
So this April, at the Return of the Ancestors, I bring with me my own ancestral line, and the knowledge that there is beauty and truth to the Caucasian race. I am at the beginning of this awareness, and I hope that others can relate to the story I tell. I hope to help restore this truth, to work with others of all nations to bring humanity into balance with each other and Mother Earth once again. For what we are discovering is truly just being rediscovered and integrated into the modern backdrop of today.

It seems I spent 2008 learning and teaching others how to be a field of love. Not a bad way to be, is it?
Suddenly I find myself meeting and interacting with people who are living fields of love, doing what they love, and making shifts in the world as a result. Proving that our personal energy fields really are bidirectional, pulling in what we are putting out to the universe.
My articles for 2009 are a showcasing of individuals and their events, products, or ideas changing the world to a better place. Proving that all it takes to change the world is doing what you love and loving what you do, and also proving we're all capable of great things!
Many of these events, products, or ideas are ones you can participate in.
After all, it takes a village of love to create a world of love….

I first met Adam at an EarthWorks for Humanity Gathering and Celebration. As I approached the gathering, the first thing I noticed was the complex medicine wheel with the merkaba on one side, and a pentagram on the other, joined in a figure 8. I was amazed at the complexity and the power of the symbolism and sacred geometry, especially on the red rocks of the vortexes of Sedona.
The private land was donated for this particular gathering. Divided into sections for the variety of events taking place, I could see teepees, several sweat lodges, and a large sacred circle, surrounded by a fence.
As I watched from the perimeter of a sacred circle, different indigenous people came to the center to say prayers, lead songs, and share their culture. I kept noticing this blonde guy walking around without a shirt. He had some kind of skirt-like wrap around his waist. Everyone there seemed to know him and respect him. In fact, he was included in every ceremony, although he didn't appear to be connected directly to any specific culture. This, was Adam Yellowbird.
At the EarthWorks for Humanity Gathering, there were many speakers sharing their knowledge and gifts about connecting with the earth. I learned about acupuncture for the Earth, a gift that connects and opens vortexes of energy, allowing the natural sacred geometry of the land to resonate with healing the planet. As there are vortexes everywhere, Earth's acupuncture can be given anywhere in the world, for healing the earth.
One of the multicultural ceremonies I witnessed included a young girl, around eleven who had commenced her first moon. The coming of womanhood ceremony was combined with another one, that of the coming of the crone. The fifty year old woman had just completed her last moon and was ready for the wisdom of the elders. All participants joined in the circle to celebrate the two natural cycles of life. We held hands, prayed, sang, and circled the two women, as they nodded and smiled, proud of their day.
This is what Adam does best: gathering and communing with all nations to share cultures and demonstrate we truly are all one.

The fourth gathering of the bridging of the America's invites the indigenous men and women wisdom keepers and youth to come together to initiate the Peruvian prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor.
"When the Eagle once again flies with the Condor, a lasting peace will reign in the Americas and will spread throughout the world to unite humanity."
The Return of the Ancestors Gathering includes all indigenous cultures from the five different continents, Yellowbird foresees. And many different ones are contacting him daily, having heard about this gathering. The intention is to unite and share the invited wisdom keeper's visions and prophesized ceremonies for peace and harmony for Mother Earth and all humanity.
"The Institute for Cultural Awareness' goal is to sponsor 72 or more global spiritual/cultural leaders and 28 youth council leaders from around the world."
These wisdom keepers will share their harmonic wisdom and understandings enabling the world to fulfill the prophecies of the ancestors.
"It is time for the return of the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine," Yellowbird announced. "It is time for the prophecies, the cultures, the languaging, the history and herstory of all people to come together as one. It is time to release cellular memory that doesn't serve us and replace it with a new memory and consciousness that gives inspiration for the future, beyond 2012. We are seeing the collapse of the old structures, and seeing the positive message behind this. We are bringing a rebirth to our world, with purification. We are the future we fully intend to be. And it begins here."
Yellowbird's Return of the Ancestors Gathering was initiated in 2007 at Lake Titicaca where the wisdom keepers last gathered. At that time, it was realized that Yellowbird's non-profit Institute of Cultural Awareness had the same mission as the visionaries of North and South America, according to the Continental Council of Indigenous Elders and Spiritual Guides. ICA'S mission is "providing a safe and healthy environment for cultural exchange and healing. Dedicated to facilitating cultural exchange programs, preserving sacred sites and honoring Indigenous traditions while bridging the gaps between the elders and the children." Adam at first resisted the idea of leading the next gathering, but soon realized it was part of his destiny. The elders gave their blessing for Adam to coordinate this 2009 gathering.
Yellowbird's background with indigenous ways began in childhood, as he grew up in a commune near Baltimore, Maryland. Different teachers came through the community to teach about getting back into nature, attuning to the elementals, and sharing the joy of the natural world while living in harmony with it. Some of his earliest teachers recognized his life mission even then and saw him as a pioneer for the children of the future. Even as a teenager he worked with healing Mother Earth.
His healing gifts are now channeled through EarthWorks for Humanity, "a catalyst for individual, community, and global efforts. As a project associated with ICA, "earth work encompasses fostering an alliance between the youth, elders, and our communities by developing and sponsoring international multicultural events and cultural exchange programs."
Not just a small event, this huge undertaking involves more than just the elders meeting in Northern AZ. The ten days of the Ancestors Gathering includes ceremonies, prayers, and celebration with a pilgrimage beginning Earth Day weekend, April 18-19, in Sedona.
Immediately following is Healing the Ancestral Memory Ceremonies, April 20-22, in Dead Horse Ranch State Park, in Cottonwood; Teachings of the Global Council, April 23, at the Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff; A Sunrise Ceremony, April 24 at the Grand Canyon; an Indigenous Forum and Ceremony, April 25-26 at the Hopi Land; closing with a Farewell Ceremony, April 27-28, back at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood.

Yellowbird foresees and encourages a pilgrimage following the elders on their route. In fact, he has several registration options for people wanting to attend.
Pre-registration fees range from $500 for attending 5 days to $1,100 for 10 days, and do not include lodging, transportation or meals.
To sponsor an Elder, the cost for the entire gathering is $5000, and that includes passport, visas, transportation, lodging, and food for at least 10 days.
Many of the elders attending have never left their birthplace and are interested in staying longer for cultural exchanges.
Here's how you can be part of the new vision of the planet, where all nations come together as one, having healed the ancestral memories and replaced them with higher visions of inspiration, peace and harmony.

Attend the gathering, even if it's only for one day. Please be aware that lodging will be filled to capacity, as will the campgrounds. So plan ahead.

Seek the sun, Yellowbird advises. Do ceremonies and spiritual practices around the sun and the moon. The sun is a portal to open up consciousness and activate our cellular memory.
Do your Merkaba Meditation with the intention to heal ancestral memory that doesn't serve and replace it with a greater vision of unity.
Do the Unity Breath meditation to hold the vision of oneness.
Go to a local water source and make a salutation or prayer. Give thanks for the abundance of water. This helps to connect you to the land and the water.
Begin a community garden. Even if you're in the city, this can be accomplished.
Visualize yourself as empowered and see yourself as a divine instrument of light.
Hold a candlelight vigil and recognize the light within yourself.
Create a global meditation group or attend one. Network with other groups with a similar mission so you are meditating on the same day.
Have a special gathering of your own. ICA will post your event on their website, which will help others find you. It can be anything from an Earth Day event to a meditation gathering where you connect with the elders and heal your ancestral memories that don't serve.
